fuel in the hearth

Birch is one of the best woods to use as a burning fuel. As well as being a native tree, Birch is quite sustainable due to it being a fast growing tree and quickly replaced. A downside is that the bark gum does collect up on flues and chimneys so they need to be cleaned quite often when burning birch.

splitting?

Splitting into logs is usually quite easy.

igniting?

Quite good for lighting fires, but does need to be cut into very small kindling, and also use small birch twigs.

sparking?

Sparks a little but not dangerously.

smoking?

Does smoke a little so do dry well before burning to minimize smoke.

heat quality?

Very good heat but does burn very quickly. It is a perfect fuel wood to combine with oak.

fragrance?

Pleasant light fragrance when burning.
